April 2011, Eagle Butte, Cheyenne River Lakota land, South Dakota, during the Longest Walk 3 northern route. Indigenous North American activists are walking across the country by two simultaneous routes (see: link) to raise awareness about the abnormally high incidence of diabetes among indigenous people in the United States. Due to the destruction of traditional diets and lifestyles indigenous populations in euro-colonised areas around the world suffer from much higher incidence of diabetes than the white settler populations. In the United States indigenous people are more than twice as likely as white people to have diabetes. “In 2001, the age-standardised prevalence of self-reported diabetes among Indigenous Australians was 11% compared with 3% among the non-Indigenous population.” Rates of diabetes are increasing worldwide and are associated with urbanization and a “western-style” diet.
